Metaphorical explorations of the political and sociological dilemmas of contemporary life inspire my work. I believe that the challenges of human existence remain essentially unchanged throughout the ages. This leads me to create pigmented plaster panels reminiscent of ancient frescoes, superimposed with classically influenced drawings. These rich, unpredictable and seemingly timeworn surfaces hint at a prior history.
The imagery resonates at many frequencies—from the personal to the global. I intend the work’s enigmatic quality to provoke emotional responses and to challenge widely held assumptions concerning our relationships to one another, to other living beings and to the earth.
The timely is juxtaposed with the timeless.–RS

As a child growing up in Colorado, Roberta Smith dreamed of adventure in the far corners of the world. Her first big adventure took her to New York City, where she studied art at Pratt Institute. After earning a BFA with highest honors, her journey took her into an award-winning career in jewelry design. Eventually, adventure lured her to sea, where she spent six years in a small sloop exploring the seven seas and visiting 60 countries along the way.
Back on land, Roberta continued her travels as a professional artist, including stints as a graphic designer, a children’s book illustrator, and a muralist. She has spent the past 20 years journeying within and without using various creative media. Her inspiration comes from dreams, politics, the natural environment, the beauty and diversity of the human family, and “the outer reaches of inner space.”
While content living on the banks of the Arkansas River in the Colorado mountains she still dreams of adventure and occasionally travels to distant lands.
