Poetry

Inoperable

Anna Antongiorgi

like the roots of trees

or fingers starting to bleed or

taking sand out of jell-o –

how many ways can you describe

the poisoned

brain? doctors must have

many images on hand

to make death

both process and

metaphor. holy mary

mother of god,

did you too ask

for a moment

of respite? blessed are the pure

of mind, they will never

know jesus like a

spine, curved

and yelling, wanting

the baptism

to fill up

the throat.

First two lines from A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing by Eimear Mcbride.
